Work In Progress

October 21, 2010

Here’s a painting I’m currently working on.

I’m strongly fascinated by all sorts of containers: bags, bottles, cans, boxes. Typically they’re disposable, yet intimately connected to our lives. You can’t literally do much without having recourse to some form of container. Down to the cellular level, we are still dealing with containment, with division and separation. Cells, within their walls, “contain” things.  Civilizations could not even begin to  exist without these utilitarian  and completely mundane objects. Cities are the greatest containers of all. In the end, when the walls and the  grand  structures collapse, containers (perhaps broken and in pieces )  are always some of the few things that endure.

Like cast-off cocoons.
